WTF happened to the Busic Biz? The Future
As I mentioned before there are 3 major record labels that sell at least 80% of the music media that is reported through Nielsen SoundScan reports. The other 20% of music is marketed and sold by indie labels or artists. That’s only the music that is tracked by SoundScan. There is a lot of music out there marketed by people who are truly independent in the sense that they don’t even bother using metrics to track their music. They do what they do and that is that. Once upon a time these kinds of metrics were absolutely required in order to measure success, but in the past decade artists are finding a new kind of independence from having to report to Big Brother.
